AS information continues to grow exponentially, storage systems need to be intelligent enough to automatically optimise both performance and cost savings.
Unified storage is one such system that makes it possible to run and manage files and applications from a single device. A unified storage system simultaneously enables storage of file data and handles the block- based I/O of enterprise applications. In actual practice, unified storage is often implemented in a NAS platform that is modified to add block-mode support.
Juicy CoutureEMC realises that to provide solutions to its customers, the entire portfolio right from the entry-level device to the top most device, has to be unified which means the same integrated solution would now provide them the file serving capability as well as the block level capability.
It means allowing customers to run their high-performance mission- critical databases, and their file serving environments, all compiled in a single unified storage. This offers highest level of data availability, performance, reliability, scalability. In one word it helps EMC to really consolidate IT landscape into one single entity.
20% Guarantees
To further improve its efficiency, EMC recently announces a 20% guarantee for its unified storage platforms.
EMC's new guarantee is not only attractive but also very relevant to help address a common user need: reducing operational expenses.
EMC says that its customers will need 20% less raw unified storage capacity in NAS and/or SAN configurations than they'll need from the competition.
This translates to superior storage efficiency when compared to other unified storage arrays - even those utilising their own documented best power balance bracelet practices.
The 20% guarantee applies to all EMC unified storage arrays that is:
* Based on out-of-the-box best practices
* No need to compromise availability or performance
* No caveats on the types of data you use
* No need to auto-delete snapshots to save space
According to the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), the 20% capacity savings in the guarantee is likely to be conservative in practice because it's based on standard, out-of-the-box configurations - before implementing any of EMC's new, innovative storage efficiency technologies and VMware integration.
And interestingly, if for some unlikely reason the capacity calculator does not demonstrate that EMC is 20% more efficient, EMC will match the shortfall with additional storage. That's how confident EMC is.
New Efficiencies
Although, this new guarantee talks specifically about today's unified storage, the larger EMC manifestation of unified storage lies at its recently unveiled new efficiency technologies. It includes advances to EMC FAST (fully automated storage tiering), new FAST Cache capabilities, and block data compression that further extend EMC's advantages in unified storage.
New advances to EMC FAST technology, which automates data movement within an array, now provides new levels of granular analysis and automated movement of block data at the sub-LUN level in CLARiiON and Celerra storage systems.
