After experiencing significant increases over me past 12 years, enroUment at secondary and postsecondary institutions w锟絣 continue to rise, albeit at a slower rate, over the next 13 years, according to the report. During the projected period, however, the number of national high school graduates is expected to decrease until 2014.
The National Center for Education Statistics, a division of the Education Department's Institute of Education Sciences, released Projections of Education Statistics to 2018 in September 2009- Among the data on enrollment, teachers, graduation and expenditures contained in die report, several projections highUghted a population trend that will ultimately demand die attention of counseling and admission offices.
According to the report, changes in the 18-year-old population over the projection period wiU have a substantive impact on the number of secondary school graduates. Between the 1993-94 and 2005-06 school years, the total number of high school graduates increased 27 percent. When projecting die graduation figures into the 2018-19 school year using population data, the Education Department predicted a decrease in graduates during the next decade. The numbers are expected to rebound for the 2016-17 school year, which wiU equate to a 9 percent increase over the 13-year total time span.
Gerri Daniels, director of admission at Northern Michigan University, said her institution has kept an eye on the forthcoming trend. "We've been planning for this for a number of years," she said. "Quite a few years ago, we strategicaUy started looking at other regions in the Midwest in order to keep a viable enrollment at our institution."
Breaking down the data into institutional components, pubUc high schools choo wedding shoes are expected to see an 11 percent increase in graduates, and private high schools should actually see a decrease of 10 percent. NACAC has analyzed historical trends in the number of high school graduates in Chapter 1 of its recent State of CoUege Admission report, available on the NACAC Web site.
