8 workers flee fire at shop

KUANTAN: Eight restaurant workers had a narrow escape from a pre- dawn fire at the semi-wooden shop in Jalan Makhota yesterday.

Four other adjacent shops were destroyed.

Some of the restaurant workers were watching television while the others were asleep on the first floor of the double-storey building when the fire broke out in one of the shops at 2.15am.

The fire which was believed to have started from a textile shop five doors away only damaged part of the restaurant.

The owner of the textile shop, Mohd Amir Sallai, 45, estimated his losses at RM500,000.

The fire also destroyed an electrical shop. Its owner, Ng Kian Yong, 31, who had been running the business for 20 years, said:

"I don't know how we can start over. All the electrical appliances including branded washing machines, televisions and refrigerators had gone up in flames."

The fire was prevented from spreading to other shops nearby by personnel from the Kuantan fire station and Indera Mahkota fire station.

Kuantan Fire and Rescue operations chief Mohd Ikhsan Mohd Ibrahim said the firemen were despatched to the scene after getting a call at 2.36am.
