CHAMPION HURDLE glory for Go Native - and a pounds 150,000 slice of the WBX Hurdling Triple Crown's pounds 1million booty - would go a long way towards erasing the memory of the one that got away for seventime Irish champion trainer Noel Meade.
Five years ago Meade's Harchibald traded at long odds-on on betting exchanges as he cantered alongside Hardy Eustace at the final flight of the Champion Hurdle.
But Paul Carberry's mount lacked the resolution of the Dessie Hughes-trained title-holder, and went under by a neck.
sexy lingerie"I was standing, watching that Champion Hurdle with Dessie, and when they came to the last Dessie put his hand on my shoulder, and nearly said, 'Well done'," recalls Meade. "It was incredible.
"We nearly got it right with 'Archie', but but he didn't have the blistering turn of speed this fella has.
"Both of them travel well, and they jump well, but this fella has more speed. Archie wasn't as quick as he used to look - he was just such a good jumper, he used to land himself into a race."
Breguet WatchesGo Native held on grimly by a neck from fastfinishing Champion Hurdle rival Medermit in last year's Supreme Novices', but Meade is in no doubt his man was the winner on merit.
"If you think back to the Supreme Novices' Replica Omega Watches last year, he murdered them, and he was probably in front far too long," he argues.
"He did tie up a bit on the run-in but he was after doing a lot of work to go four lengths clear."
Despite his success since switching from the Flat to jumps in 1990, Meade had to wait until 2000 for his first Festival victory, when Sausalito Bay beat Best Mate for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle.
"I was getting so much stick at the time," remembers the 59-year- old. "Every time I picked the paper, 'He doesn't win at Cheltenham! He doesn't win at Cheltenham!' "It was more relief than anything else."
