DAYTONA BEACH - Brumos Racing didn't win the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona on Sunday, but it celebrated just the same.
high heel shoes The team's No. 59 Porsche-powered Riley broke down in the 22nd hour. But the organization's thumbprint clearly was on the winning Porsche-Riley for newly formed Action Express Racing.
When Brumos reduced its presence in Grand-Am Road Racing to one car, Action Express bought the parts and pieces from the second team. Equally important they hired a lot of the crewmen and driver Joao Barbosa.
The biggest difference was their V-8 engine. Brumos used a factory-backed six-cylinder engine, the same engine they used a year ago to win the 24-hour race.
Sunday's victory by Barbosa, Terry Borcheller, Mike Rockenfeller and Ryan Dalziel might be the first step a significant change for Porsche in the sports car series. Former Brumos owner Bob Snodgrass unsuccessfully asked Porsche four years ago to build a V-8. When it refused, he built his own.
Although Snodgrass died in 2007, his engine won during its racing debut.
"The flat-six we had last year, it's very different," Barbosa said. "We had to work to have a good compromise to get the speed out of the car. The drivability is very different as well. The other one works really good on the high speed; this one works better on the low speed.
"I think our strongest point was the infield. And that paid off."
The engine's greatest asset was its durability. The winning car was the only prototype that didn't make a stop in the garage area during the 755-lap race. The drivers kept it on the track without hitting another car and the team, most with roots wholesale lingerie to Brumos, never made a mistake on pit road.
They beat the BMW-Riley for Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Max Papis and Justin Wilson by 52 seconds.
With the 24-hour race done, the series now has a month off to rebuild cars before the next race at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Action Express will be there with Borcheller and Barbosa. So will Brumos with Darren Law and David Donohue. Both cars will have different ownership and engine packages, but they will be prepared at the same shop as they continue to share some management and engineers to save money.
"Officially they're not our teammates, I guess," Donohue said. "But they are our friends. It's a lot of the Brumos guys."
Chanel WatchesThe new team came together so quickly during the offseason, some are still trying to figure out how to create their own identity.
"I don't know all the details, to be honest with you," Borcheller said. "You know, one of the things that I've learned over the years is the experience of the team is valuable, and lot of it is being able to have the same guys around. With the second Brumos car leaving and those guys needing work, it was a natural fit for him [Brumos owner Dan Davis] as far as having the shop space and being able to coordinate the effort with the Action Express program.
"It worked out great. So far, so good."
