IT IS difficult to put a value on the dazzling double strike by West Brom's Chris Brunt.

Instead of the unpalatable prospect of a third successive defeat for his promotionchasing side, Brunt's two goals in 10 second-half minutes provided a confidence boost and hoisted Roberto Di Matteo's men back on to the tail of leaders Newcastle.

Albion fans were beginning to panic as their team seemed to be running out of steam and ideas when Derby scored against the run of play immediately after the break.

Dozy defenders failed to sense the danger when Robbie Savage delivered a high ball into the area and remained rooted to the spot as lone striker Chris Porter jabbed home from close range. After losing their previous league game and then being bundled out of the FA Cup by Reading in a fifth-round replay, at that point the odds were strongly in favour of another upset for Albion.

But Brunt took the game by the scruff of its neck and compensated for the fact that Albion were without their top strike force of Roman Bednar and Ishmael Miller by delivering key strikes of top quality. Albion's assistant manager Eddie Newton said: "I am not sure that Chris is truly appreciated outside of the dressing room.

"His performances this season have merited more goals than he has scored, but today he got what he deserved."

Brunt's first in the 67th minute was a gem. Substitute Simon Cox won the ball in midfield and delivered a terrific pass to his feet. Instead of rushing his shot, Brunt bided his time as he stepped inside Derby centre-back Jake Buxton before unleashing a low left- footed shot into the corner.

He was on target again in the 77th minute as Derby failed to deal with a corner from the left by Graham Dorrans. Brunt had a shot blocked, and so did Cox, but Brunt was on hand to convert his second attempt.

Derby's previous confidence was ruined and in the 83rd minute Cox controlled a through-ball from James Morrison on his chest before firing his shot beneath keeper Stephen Bywater.

It was an impressive turnaround by Albion.

Newton added: "It was not easy for us after that midweek cup defeat but we kept going for the 90 minutes and showed a lot of determination. We know it is going to be a hard slog between now and the end of the season against teams who are either looking for promotion or trying to avoid relegation.

"Every point will be important, but these three today were special after our two previous defeats."

Derby manager Nigel Clough said: "Our performance reflected us as a team. We are nearly there but not quite.

"We matched Albion for long spells and knocked the ball about well but then we gave away silly goals."

The icing on the cake for Albion was the impressive debut performance of on-loan Ben Watson, who promises to offer more steel in their midfield or central defence.

Newton said: "Ben gave us another dimension. He has settled in exceptionally well, oozes confidence,
