Leeds teenagers see babies as

Health bosses have been told more needs to be done to tackle the high number of teenage pregnancies in Leeds.

As reported in the Yorkshire Evening Post last month, the teenage conception rate for girls aged between 15 and 17 in the city in 2008 was 50.6 per 1,000.

That is an increase on the 2007 rate of 48.1 and much higher than the national average of 40.4.

Health bosses were quizzed about their work to tackle the issue by councillors at a Leeds City Council health scrutiny board Breguet Replica Watches meeting.

Coun Alan Lamb (Con, Wetherby) said: "For some young people, in some communities, it's an aspiration by some teenagers to get pregnant because that's the best available option to them.

"It's depressing to say but in some cases they are probably right."
He added: "The cost to the city for each teenage pregnancy is A[pounds sterling]100,000.

"If you times that by the number of pregnancies, you are funding millions of pounds each year.

"Let's stop funding posts to deal with it, let's put money into the community to deal with it."

Arthur Giles, representative on the scrutiny board for patient group Leeds Link, said he had not seen any change in the numbers of teenage pregnancies over the last 15 years.

"I think it's time for a change, we have not really moved on," he said.

"We need to think again about how we are addressing this issue."
Nigel Gray, director of commissioning for NHS Leeds, said cutting teenage pregnancies was "one of the targets that continues to be a challenge for us.

"It's not just a Leeds issue but this is a national issue.

"That does not mean we are not dedicated to the cause Zenith Watches and what we are trying to do here."

John Lawlor, chief executive of NHS Leeds, said they were already doing work in communities.

He added: "It's about how all the resources available to us are used in different ways."
