Byline: Robin Gibson
IT'S a bone of contention thoroughly gnawed that the best things come to those who wait. Some of us have been waiting for years and get nothing but boredom and disappointment in return for our patience.
That's never the case, however, with the Grand National, and as the build-up gathers pace I've been itching to bring you online news of last year's winner, Mon Mome, a repeat contestant with a genuine chance of a repeat win.
Sexy ShoesOkay, there's that YouTube comedy video (watch it again at tinyurl.com/mome1 - it gets no less amusing), but we want it from the real horse's mouth, or at least his trainer's.
Last week eager loggers-on to venetiawilliams.com were tantalised by the promise "coming soon". This week there's a nice photomontage of the great horse, his trainer and the National trophy. There's an email address and, slightly surprisingly, even Williams' mobile number - but still no website.
If ever a site needed to come soon, it's this one. They've got until April 10 to detonate the thing, so let's hope there's frantic work behind the scenes. If it's anything like the classy front end, it should be impressive.
One place where there is frantic work going on is the small stable of Paul Magnier in County Kildare. On second thoughts, it's unlikely the work is frantic - it's far too diligent for that.
Magnier's site (paulmagnier.ie) might be rudimentary in design but it is brilliant - a shining example of how to provide detailed information. Magnier may have had only four wins this season (three by Duers and one by Golan Go) and trains few horses, but he's got a lot to tell you.
Many trainers offer token bulletins; some - like Mick Channon with his gallops films - are surprisingly open. Video is a stranger to the Magnier site and Bedat & Co Replica Watches one suspects the photographs might have been taken with a Wilkin-Welsh Folding Plate (see antiquewoodcameras.com for more), but the blow-by-blow account of the regime is great.
Not only do you get "Califa's nose discharge from his sinus is getting better slowly; that said, he continues to train well... at the farm Duers galloped and will work with Irish Realm tomorrow at the Curragh twice on the sand", you also find this sort of detail: 23/3/10 -Gallop schooling ground sand x 2. Fresh 22/3/10 -Open gallop sand x 1. Went well. Looks great 21/3/10 -Off today (Sunday) 20/3/10 -Gallop farm... And so on. Duers is entered in the National but a fair few need to drop out before he gets to mix it with Mon Mome, but one thing's for sure - if he makes it, we'll know how fit he is.
Horses' progress is set out down to the last cough (eg, Carutomark, March 13, coughed three times) and Magnier contributes a frank and full daily diary of stable life. The approach is exemplary and captains of bigger vessels would do well to ply the Magnier line.
Launched this week at the other end of the technological creek from Magnier's downhome site is Sportpost (sportpost.com), brainchild of, among others, Paul Stewart, son of racehorse owner Andy.
Fifteen months in development, with the motto 'Fans take charge', Sportpost is an ambitious sports social media site and looks the part.
Newcomers are helped out by an attractive young woman in a white dress, which is what one has come to expect these days (on high-end websites that is, not in real life) and the site pulls together news feeds, vi
