HER obsession with a certain type of exclusive handbag has become as much a part of Victoria Beckham as her eternal pout and impractical fashion attire.
Yet her affection for the Hermes Birkin bag may soon be a thing of the past.
Animal rights protesters are targeting Mrs Beckham after it emerged that design house Hermes breeds crocodiles in dreadful conditions to provide skin for the expensive accessory. The former Spice Girl famously has one Replica Gucci Shoes in every colour in a collection reportedly numbering as many as 100.
Last week, it emerged Hermes bosses farm their own purposebred crocodiles in northern Australia to cater for the 3,000 exotic bags the company makes every year.
It can take three or four crocodiles to make one of the exclusive handbags. Some of the bags owned by Mrs Beckham and other celebrities such as Eva Longoria cost up to k35,000. Indeed, they are so popular that thousands of people Sexy Dresses are left years on waiting lists to receive one.
Officials from at least two animal rights groups are now calling for Mrs Beckham to publicly drop her support for the designer. A spokesman for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), one of the biggest animal rights group in the world, said: 'The mere thought of purposely breeding and killing crocodiles for an outdated, overpriced handbag should make any fashionista's skin crawl.
