Natural gas pipeline explodes

A natural gas pipeline exploded Tuesday morning in a rural area about five miles west of Pocasset, injuring three workers and sending a fireball into the sky that could be seen from miles away, county officials said.

One worker sustained second- or third-degree burns and was rushed via helicopter to Integris Baptist Medical Burn Center in Oklahoma City, said Dale Thompson, director of emergency management for Grady County. The pipeline is owned by Enogex, a natural gas pipeline company controlled by OGE Energy Corp.

Enogex closed the pipeline valves after the blast, but residual natural gas continued to burn at the site of the blast on Tuesday afternoon, Alford said.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear, he said.

An Oklahoma Corporation Commission worker was on his way to the work site when he witnessed the explosion from a few miles away, said Matt Skinner, a spokesman for the commission.

The fire, which burned about an acre of grass, was almost completely contained by noon on Tuesday, Thompson said.
