Susan Duncan allegedly made numerous false expenses claims towards trips to Antigua and Jamaica while employed at The Meadows School in Oldbury, West Midlands.

A disciplinary panel considering her case, along with another former teacher at the school, Margaret Simcox, yesterday failed to reach a decision after deliberating for almost five hours.

Ms Duncan is also accused of making claims for items including scuba gear, computer equipment and a handbag.

Other claims include money for a face mask, a packet of pocket tissues, clothes, footwear, stain remover, a "great deal of luggage" and "lots of deodorant", the General Teaching Council (GTC) committee heard.

The teacher argues she travelled to the two islands with Ms Simcox as "risk assessment" visits for future school trips.

Members of Ms Simcox's family also allegedly joined a subsequent school trip to Jamaica at a reduced rate.

Ms Simcox, also known as Rita, denies three charges of professional misconduct, while Ms Duncan, also known as Angela, denies all seven such charges made against her.

Yesterday, Andrew Faux, the presenting officer to the GTC panel, said Ms Duncan had been "opportunistic" with school money and used it towards her exotic holidays.

He told the hearing in Birmingham: "Is this a happy but proper coincidence between public and private interests, or is it a private activity being funded by school funds?
