Police closed a town centre road as pupils from schools across Uttoxeter descended on the Market Place to take part in a Reading Wave.
Children from 17 schools represented in the Uttoxeter Pyramid were entertained by renowned author and poet Michael Rosen as masses of teachers and parents watched on yesterday.
Replica Hublot WatchesThe unique event - attended by children aged between five and 14 - signalled the end of Reading Week and was seen as a "celebration" of the joys of the written word.
Joint organiser Eleanor Shakespeare, a librarian at Thomas Alleyne's High School, said: "It is fantastic and I am overwhelmed with the support we have had from the schools and everyone in the town centre.
"Reading is one of the most important skills to learn and once you have grasped it you can only improve.
"It is vitally important and gives freedom that nothing else does and you can do it any time and anywhere. The whole idea of this was to give the children experience of a professional author.
"Each school has been doing different things, with various authors coming in and giving performances, so thousands of children will have shared this unique experience by the time it is finished."
Following the Reading Wave under the Samuel Johnson statue, 1,200 children made their way to Uttoxeter Racecourse for two more performances by Mr Rosen.
Sexy Clothes The former children's laureate said: "What a great idea to stand in a town square and read poems.
"It is great to see all of the children getting involved with the poetry and joining in. It is a very special occasion."
Nick Brown, headteacher at Oldfields Hall Middle School, said "All credit to the organisers because it is rare to get all of the schools in the area together like this.
"The whole point of the initiative was to highlight the importance of reading to the children and show them how enjoyable it can be."
Susan O'Farrell, headteacher at Thomas Alleyne's, also hailed Reading Week as a huge success.
She said: "We have been holding Reading Weeks at our school for a number of years now and they have proven very successful.
"This year has been unique with all of the schools joining together to celebrate the joys of reading. The turnout was excellent and it was well received by the children and members of the public."
A total of 10 Thomas Alleyne's students had the chance to meet Replica Swiss Army Watches Mr Rosen after winning a competition held at the school.
Harry Millican, aged 14, was one of the lucky winners.
He said: "Michael was a very friendly guy and I just really wanted to talk to him about everything."
Fellow winner Catherine Easdon, aged 14, also enjoyed the experience.
She said: "I have really enjoyed Reading Week and it was great to be able to meet Michael.
"He is really good at what he does and he comes across like he is a big happy kid inside, which makes him even more entertaining."
